Abstract
The livelihood of fishermen can serve as an economic support for fishing households alongside work in the agricultural sector. Although the income generated by fishermen around Ngrenehan Beach is currently not very promising, the fisheries sector can provide an alternative to the agricultural sector that is more profitable. To cover household needs, the wives of fishermen typically participate in fishing-related activities. Activities undertaken by the wives of fishermen include selling fish caught by their husbands and opening food stalls around the beach. The income of the wives is usually much higher than that of their husbands. During slow periods, their daily income typically ranges from IDR 20,000 to IDR 30,000, but during weekends or public holidays, their earnings are much greater. Meanwhile, their husbands earn an average income of IDR 50,000 after each fishing trip, and if the catch is small, they will incur greater losses. The significant contribution of women in the public sphere does not reduce their domestic roles; women spend an average of 13-15 hours a day on both domestic and public work, while men spend around 8-10 hours a day, assuming they only work in the public sector and do not engage in domestic tasks. Thus, gender roles in households still reflect a gender bias, and there is a need for gender awareness to achieve equal partnership between men and women in the household. This is essential to develop the potential resources possessed by both men and women.
