Educators' Perspectives on the Free Nutritious Meal Program

Abstract

The Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) aims to address malnutrition and stunting among Indonesian children while improving educational quality. This study examines educators' perspectives on MBG implementation through in-depth interviews with nine informants from various schools. Findings indicate general support for the program's objectives, yet reveal serious concerns including inconsistent food quality, weak vendor oversight, food poisoning risks, and poorly targeted beneficiaries. A political sociology analysis uncovers power distribution tensions among the government, vendors, and schools that generate competing interests. Informants agreed the program requires thorough evaluation rather than termination, with improved beneficiary selection and stricter supervision. Some informants prioritized equitable educational facilities as a more sustainable long-term alternative.
