Abstract

Galeri Kerukunan Umat Beragama in Jarak Village, Wonosalam Sub-district, Jombang Regency, is a tourism support facility built to represent the values of tolerance and diversity within the local community. During the initial construction phase, the building faced limitations in terms of its appearance and visual identity due to constraints on available resources. This community service initiative aimed to enhance the building’s visual quality by utilising waste Compact Discs (CDs) as adaptive façade elements. The program was implemented using the service-learning method through the ‘Sustainable Built Environment Service Learning’ course, involving two lecturers, sixteen students from the architecture program at Petra Christian University, the Makmur Bersinar Jarak Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes), and the community of Jarak Village. The implementation methods included identifying the partners’ needs, designing façade modules, collecting materials, assembling panels, installing the façade, and evaluating the activity. The program results showed that 52 façade panels made from waste compact discs were successfully installed at the Interfaith Harmony Gallery. An evaluation of 96 respondents revealed positive feedback, particularly regarding aesthetic aspects (79.00%), economic benefits (77.04%), and environmental impact (72.32%). This initiative not only produced a physical outcome in the form of an adaptive façade but also enhanced community participation and strengthened students’ contextual learning experiences through the application of sustainability principles and collaboration with the local community.
